SGM James W. Sharp, 85, of Greenwood, DE passed away peacefully Sunday, December 31, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family. James was born in Milford, the son of the late George E. and Elsie M. (Biddle) Sharp. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952 and proudly served our country during both the Korean War and the Vietnam War before retiring after 40 years as a Sergeant Major. James began working for A&P grocery stores in 1949, working at both Milford locations for many years, then transferring to the Smyrna location, where he worked for several more years before retiring in 1997 from Super Fresh after 48 years. James was a devout family man. He was very involved in his son’s and grandson’s sports activities, especially wrestling; loved camping, traveling, and going to Disney World with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers George E. Sharp, Jr. and Fred Sharp and three sisters Elsie Ethredge, Ruth J. Hammond and Virginia Williams.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years Mary Alice (Hammond) Sharp; his children Jim Sharp, Jr. (Bonnie), Debbie Winkler (Bill), Jerry Sharp, Denise Conrad (John), and Darrin Sharp (Wendy); two special grandchildren whom he helped raise, Michael Sharp (Kelly) and Jason Sharp (Janet); his grandchildren Chad Sharp, Cindy Warfel (Brendon), Eric Fannin (Lynn), Shannon Fitzwater (Tim), Shelly Simpson (Tim), Michael Winkler (Carey), Jerry Sharp, Jr., Pearl Zencak (Daniel), and Justin Conrad (Laura); and his great grandchildren Carissa, Alexis, Delaney, Hannah, Austin, Caitlyn, Keegan, Kohen, Brooke, Kathryn, Travis, Hunter, Colton, J.J., Hayden, Ashley, Katelyn, J.T., Patrick, Michael, Thomas and Owen.

A viewing will be held from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford where funeral services will begin at 1 pm. Burial with military honors will follow in Hollywood Cemetery, Milford Harrington Highway, Harrington. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to either the Milford Lions Club, P.O. Box 25, Milford, DE  19963 or to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE  19963.
