Mary L. VanBergen

Mary L. VanBergen, 68, peacefully departed this world on August 11th, 2020, at her home in Milford, DE. Mary (Deaton) was born April 17th, 1952 in Wash. DC to Agnes (Abell) Deaton and Fred M. Deaton…She grew up in Suitland, MD, obtained a nursing degree from Prince George Community College, and worked as an RN for the majority of her life, retiring in 2017. In the early 1980s she met and married Duane William VanBergen of South Bend, Indiana; they enjoyed life together until his death in 2007.

Mary is survived by stepson Duane(Debbie) VanBergen of Severn, MD, and stepdaughter Carla (VanBergen) Middleton; stepchildren Kyle and Ashley, and 4 great-grandchildren.  She also left behind a sister, Doreen Deaton Ward (Steve) of Centreville, MD; niece Samantha Ward, nephew Ethan Cunningham (son of sister Pam Deaton Lloyd, who preceded Mary in death in 2016) of Long Island, NY.

Throughout her life Mary loved animals, particularly cats; enjoyed caring for people, gardening, traveling, and visiting the beach.  While living with husband Duane (Van) in New Bern, NC, they became involved in and enjoyed square-dancing.  The loss of her kind, caring spirit will be felt by all who knew her.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be sent to the BayHealth Cancer Center, Sussex Campus, Milford, DE 19963.
