Margaret Osborne Obituary

Margaret Webb Osborne, age 97, of Dover, passed away on February 4, 2024. She was born July 4, 1926, to Lucius C. and Alice Robbins Webb of Milford, Delaware. After graduating Milford High School in 1944, Margaret earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from the University of Delaware in 1948. She then served for five years as Kent County 4-H Club Agent for the Delaware Agricultural Extension Service. In 1952 she married Robert E. Osborne, Jr. They enjoyed fifty-five years together.

Margaret later taught kindergarten at the Little School, Dover, from 1962 to 1971, where she introduced and taught the Phonovisual Method of reading. From 1971 to 1981, she taught childcare at Kent County Vocational-Technical School (now Poly-Tech), Woodside. During this time, she served on the Advisory Committee to the Department of Home Economics at Delaware State College (now DSU) and on the Governor’s Advisory Council for Education of Exceptional Children. After retirement in 1981, Margaret organized the volunteer program for the Dover Blood Bank. She was a member of Master Beta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Milford.

Margaret was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Dover, where she served as President of the Women of Christ Church, member of the Altar Guild, Needlepoint Guild, Sunday school teacher, and youth advisor. 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Kathryn I. Webb and Orpha W. Ashton (Grover), and brother, L. Robbins Webb, all of Milford.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jean O. Simons (Howard) of Glenview, Illinois, and Leslie O. McKernan (Stephen) of League City, Texas, two grandsons, A. Levi Simons (Stacie) of Los Angeles, California, and Samuel Z. Simons (Erica) of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, two granddaughters, Stephanie G. McKernan and Jennifer A. McKernan, both of Houston, Texas, a great-granddaughter, Eva Roseleigh Simons of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, a sister-in-law, Kathryn D. Webb of Milford, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 9, 2024, at Christ Episcopal Church, 523 S. State Street, Dover, DE. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Friends of Historic Christ Church, Dover, c/o Delaware Community Foundation, P. O. Box 1636, Wilmington, Delaware 19899.
