Madeline Jean Herzog, 74, of Milford, DE, passed away at home early Sunday evening, September 5, 2021. Madeline was born in New York City. She was a graduate of Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School in Brooklyn, NY; then, having received a full academic scholarship, she graduated from Fordham University in three and one half years, with a Bachelors Degree in education. For 33 years, Madeline taught in both private and public schools in different parts of the United States, before retiring in 2011. During her teaching career, Madeline taught over 5,000 young people, consistently and lovingly establishing a positive learning environment for each of them, ensuring their success and gaining her their love and respect. Along the way, "Mrs. Herzog" wrote a history of the 101st Airborne Division as a training aid for the soldiers in the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. Everywhere she went, her Parish Community and the relationship she both garnered from and increased in the members of each of those communities was loving, compelling, and edifying. For over 10 years, Madeline found her spiritual home in and was a very active member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Milford, where she and her husband, Deacon Bob, formed a positive and effective ministerial team in service to Parish Members. As a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. John's, her strong desire to serve her brothers and sisters in need was a powerful and healing instrument in the Hands of Almighty God improving the lives of many.She was preceded in death by her mother, Frances McCutcheon, and her brother, William Dawson.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years; two daughters, Evamarie Rodahaver (Kevin) and Katharine Engelhard; one son, Michael Herzog; her grandchildren, Captain Molly Homer (John), Megan Hornberger (Josh), Robert Rodahaver, Madeline Rodahaver, Zachary Rodahaver, Francis Engelhard, and Charles Engelhard; a great granddaughter, Hayden Grace McCreery; and her sister, Frances Pieroni.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, September 10, 2021 at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, 506 Seabury Avenue, Milford. Burial will be at 1 pm on Monday, September 13 in Crownsville Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville, MD.
