Dennis L. Schafer

Dennis L. Schafer, 88, of Milford, DE passed away Saturday, March 21, 2026 at home. Mr. Schafer was born in Woodworth, North Dakota, the son of the late Samuel T.R. Schafer and Sophia (Schelske) Heizelman and step father William Heizelman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was an airplane mechanic, working on the C124's. During his tour of duty, he was assigned to the African Congo for 3 months. After his service to our country, Dennis went to work at Kraft Foods in Dover as a packaging maintenance mechanic, working there until retiring in June of 1997. He was a member of Living Hope Ministries in Milford. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid Sprint Car Racing fan. He also enjoyed watching and feeding the birds in his yard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Arlo D. Schafer; a step brother Jerry Heizelman; 3 step sisters Vida Petersen, Bernice Faul and Verla Faul.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years Georgeanne (Ford) Schafer; a daughter Darla Schafer; a son Darren Schafer (Julie); 3 grandchildren Brenna K. Schafer (Bryan), Kaitlyn A. Schafer (Anthony) and Reid W. Schafer (Nola); a brother Leo W. Schafer (Geraldine); a sister Jennell Heizelman (Marvin); as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

A Celebration of Life for Dennis will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford. Burial will be private in North Dakota. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to either the AMC Museum Foundation, PO Box 2024, Dover AFB, DE 19902-9998 or to a charity of your choice.
