Cynthia Lou (Hopkins) Garrett, age 69, of Houston, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones, after showing tremendous courage throughout her battle with cancer. Born on November 16, 1955, in Easton, Maryland, Cynthia was the daughter of Lloyd Perry Hopkins and Margaret (Peggy) Leight Hopkins, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Colonel Richardson High School and spent her adult life as a devoted homemaker, taking care of her family and creating a loving home for her four daughters and husband, who were the center of her world. In her younger years, Cynthia loved spending time outdoors and had a horse named Little Bit, whom she rode all over. Those days of freedom and joy reflected the adventurous and spirited side of her nature that she carried throughout her life. Cynthia also had a special place in her heart for wildlife. She helped her husband, Sonny, raise bees — and in those early days of beekeeping, they made honey-flavored ice cream at the Delaware State Fair, which always sold out before the morning was even over. In addition to beekeeping, Cynthia loved every creature that wandered through her yard — deer, turkeys, and anything else that moved. She also loved her flowers, especially irises. When she was younger, she tried to collect every color she could find, filling the yard with blooms in every shade imaginable. Cynthia’s love of nature could only be matched by her competitive spirit at the card table. If you ever played cards with her, you knew better than to underestimate her — she loved going head-to-head with her grandchildren, and she usually won.
Cynthia is survived by her devoted husband of 31 years, William Daniel (Sonny) Garrett; her loving children, Heather Pellrin of Illinois, Mandy Wilson and husband Brent of Maryland, April Mignogno and husband Michael of Maryland, and Amber Passwaters and husband Allan of Delaware; her nine grandchildren — Hannah, Chase, Leah, Alexis, Taylor, Riley, Mason, Emily, and Hope— and her great-grandchild, Silas. She is also survived by her siblings: Sandy Reynolds of Frederica, DE; Trish Hopkins of East New Market, MD; Stephanie Milligan and husband Art of Denton, MD; Claudia Eck and husband Bob of Wyoming, DE; Stanley Hopkins of Preston, MD; and Marcy Larmore and husband Tim of Preston, MD.
Services will be private, with cremation and burial at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, where her name will be honored on the Memorial Wall.
A family dinner celebrating her life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cynthia’s memory to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE.
