Billy Houston Holmes, Jr.

Billy Houston Holmes, Jr., 52, of Milford, DE passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.  He was born to Billy H. Holmes, Sr. and Betty J. (Stamey) Holmes.  He graduated from DuVal High School, Class of 1988.

Always an avid sports fan, growing up Billy was into every sport imaginable. He was best described as having baseball run through his veins.  He would tell stories about going to the racetracks to watch the horses with his parents, a passion that remained with him as he loved going to Harrington Raceway to place his bets and watch the big screens.  His love for sports stayed with him throughout the years and although he would watch any sporting event on television, he was a diehard Redskins fan and Maryland Terrapins fan.  Billy enjoyed playing poker and participated in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, making it to the last round only to be defeated by Chris Ferguson.

Proudest moments were watching his three sons succeed academically and athletically.  He enjoyed every practice and every game that he was able to attend due to his health and thoroughly enjoyed watching his sons play baseball and football.  He was ecstatic when Nate told him that he had received the 2021 Sportsmanship Award for Football, when Trevor was accepted into the University of New Haven in CT and Zach’s outstanding athletic accomplishments as he approaches his senior year in high school.

Sports weren’t the only loves of Billy’s life.  Animals have also brought much joy to Billy, including his fur babies, Carly and Alexa.  Cooking was another.  He liked to create his own new recipes but also made sure to carry on and share traditional family recipes.  

Billy was always happiest when he was spending time with his family.  He was always a kindhearted stand-up person, and his overwhelmingly positive personality was contagious.
He is preceded in death by his father, Billy Houston Holmes, Sr. 

He is survived by his mother Betty J. (Stamey) Holmes; his sons Trevor, Nathan, and Zachary Holmes; his sisters Peggy Kurczewski (John Penkert), Sherry (Mark) Smith, and Libby Holmes; and longtime partner Denise Ann Ali; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family, including all of Denise’s family in which he shared a special bond.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Monday, July 18, 2022, at Ascension Catholic Church, 12700 Lanham Severn Rd., Bowie, MD 20720.
