Barry Marshall "Big Huck" Smith, 70, of Harrington, Delaware formerly of Dagsboro, DE and Lawton/Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 11, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving family. Barry was born in Berlin, MD the son of the late Earl George and Edith Mae (Ketterman) Smith. He received his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Delaware Technical and Community College. He began his career with the Delaware State Police, serving for 23 years before retiring as a Sergeant. He was a troopers trooper. He was the leader of the Delaware State Police Electronic and Surveillance Division from 1981-2003. He always made himself available to troopers and other agencies to assist in complex investigations that required electronic equipment. He loved his job. He was a big man with a big heart.
He also served in the Delaware National Guard for 27 years before retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 4. Barry was responsible for writing the the CEOI for the State of Delaware, which is the SOI for state communications. Barry was a member of Delaware Lodge #37 A.F. & A.M. in Dagsboro, where he had served as Grand Master. He was a member of the First Baptist Church Lawton in Lawton, OK, a member of the Dagsboro Volunteer Fire Company and a member of the National Technical Investigators Association where he served as Past President.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 25 years Janet Smith, four daughters Elizabeth (Lil Huck) Brode and her husband Derrick, Shannon Smith and her fiancé Rennie, Amber Smith and Brittany Smith; three grandchildren Halie Elizabeth Brode, Mary Christine Brode, and Harper Olivia Hunt; two sisters Joyce Daisy and Betty West and her husband Fred; and one brother Sherman " Snuffy" Smith and his wife Berta; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held from 3 - 5 pm on Sunday, April 18, 2021 at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford. A second viewing will be held from 10 - 11 am on Monday, April 19, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 200 Weiner Avenue, Harrington where Masonic Services will be held at 11 am and funeral services will be held at 11:15 am. All attendees must adhere to the current COVID-19 restrictions including mask wearing and social distancing. Burial will be private with military honors at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
