Barbara (Covington) Brown, formerly of Milford, DE, died on Friday, January 2, 2026, at her assisted living residence in Lakewood, CO. She was 88.
Barbara was a woman of keen intellect and even greater kindness. She faced life’s challenges with grace and humor, guided by her steadfast faith and a deep love for her family and friends. Each day she put more love in the world.
She was born in January of 1937, in Ridgely, MD. She was the daughter of the late Calvin C. Covington and Doris J. (McClintock) Covington. Barbara graduated from Ridgely High School where she was the valedictorian. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland, College Park, where she majored in English. Based on her academic achievements, she was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. She was active in the Wesley Foundation and was on the staff of the campus newspaper as well as the campus literary magazine. She married Wayne R. Brown of Harrington, DE, in August of 1960.
Barbara was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrington, DE, since 1960, and served as a teacher of an adult Sunday school class there for more than 50 years.
She taught high school English; was a teacher’s aide at Lake Forest South Elementary school; and worked for the Harrington Journal for many years, starting by selling classified advertisements and working her way up to being an Associate Editor. For over 40 years, she worked at Chick’s Saddlery in their graphics shop.
Barbara is survived by her son Alex C. Brown and his partner Mary Stone, of Denver, CO; her sister Karin Coward of Easton, MD; two nephews, Victor (Yvonne Borreson) Coward, III, and Scott Jordan; two nieces, Paula (Chris) Larrimore and Yvonne Pickle; four great nieces, Hollie (Regis) Breen, Cameron Larrimore, Julianna Coward and Brianna Pickle; two great nephews, Brian Brooks and Will Coward; and one great-great nephew, Regis Breen. She is also survived by her beloved cat, Lucky.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sons, Baby Boy Brown and Wayne R. Brown, Jr., her sister, Mary Lynn Jordan, and her brother, John R. Covington.
A memorial service will be held on February 6, 2026 at 11:00 am at Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrington, DE. There will be fellowship in the church hall following the service.
