She was a member of the graduating class of 1961 from Harrington High School, and graduated from James Madison University with a BA in Education in 1965. She began her teaching career working at the Dover Air Force Base School, then transferred to the Lake Forest School District where she taught elementary school students for many years before retiring in 2000.

Nancy was very active in the Delaware Volunteer Fire Service. She joined the Harrington Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary on May 13, 1968.
