Charles B. Merritt, Jr. 90, of Lincoln, DE formerly of Norwood, PA passed away Friday, September 25, 2015 in Courtland Manor Nursing Home, Dover. Charles was born in Springfield, PA the son of the late Charles B. and Mae (Porter) Merritt, Sr. Charles entered the U.S. Navy in September 1942 where he served for 4 years. During his tour of duty, Charles was captured by the enemy and remained a POW for 14 months. When he was discharged from the service, he received several awards, including the Purple Heart. He was a plumber and  a member of the Plumbers Union, Local # 690 in Philadelphia. After retiring from the Plumbers Union, he and his wife Rita retired to Lincoln, DE in 1985. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, watching his Purple Martins, listening to Country & Western music and going to the casinos. He also enjoyed watching local sports, especially the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles. He was often called for help with plumbing projects until he turned 90. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years Rita E. (Burke) Merritt in December 2014 as well as two brothers-in-law David Ross and Bill Harris

He is survived by his son Daniel Merritt, his wife Linda and their son Justin. He is also survived by a daughter Carol, son Charles, 5 grandchildren; 1 great grandson and two sisters Doris Ross and Bettie Sue Harris.

Funeral services will be held at 12 pm on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford where friends may call from 11 am to 12 pm. Burial will be private in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to either Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE  19963 or to the American Cancer Society, for Cancer Research, 92 Reads Way, #205, New Castle, DE  19720.
